The Chapter would like to thank Rachel Scherle of the US Attorney General’s Office for her presentation on the Elder Justice Initiative and Elder Financial Abuse.
Chapter Officer Elections – 2019 is an election year for the Des Moines Chapter. All officer positions are open for nominations and the description of those offices are listed under the announcements section of the chapter website.
In order to maintain a vibrant chapter, leadership is required. I know that many of you have volunteered your time in the past and I would like to thank you for your efforts as well as thank the current officers. For those of you who have not yet had an opportunity to hold an officer position, please consider volunteering for a two-year term.

Presenter: Lloyd Carlson West Des Moines Police Department - Skimming
Detective Lloyd Carlson is a police officer with the West Des Moines Police Department in West Des Moines, Iowa. He has been with the department since April 17, 1989.
Prior to his employment with the West Des Moines Police Department, he worked as a police cadet for three years with the City of Des Moines, Iowa and attended college at Des Moines Area Community College, where he received his Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.
He graduated in the top ten of his academy class. Since graduation, Detective Carlson served about 5 years in the uniform division of the department until his transfer to the Criminal Investigation Unit in August of 1994. After his transfer, he specialized in the area of financial crimes, where he has primarily worked for the last 24 ½ years.
Other duties include being a certified instructor for the department in both the PR-24 and ASP self-defense batons. He also served as a member of the Special Response Team (SRT) for five years.
Detective Carlson attended the Secret Service Question Document course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia and became his department’s first handwriting analyst. He was a charter member of the Iowa Police Question Document Examiners Association.
He served as the mid-Iowa coordinator for the Iowa Financial Crimes Network which was an internet service that provided a range of training and networking opportunities relating to white collar crimes throughout the state and now regularly attends the Central Iowa Bank Peers group meetings to help coordinate efforts to stop financial crimes involving Iowa’s financial institutions.
Detective Carlson has received two Federal accommodations from the DEA and USPS, two Departmental Accommodations, and an Excellence Unit Award.
Detective Carlson regularly does community outreach speaking engagements to bring awareness of schemes relating to seniors and others.
Areas of expertise that Officer Carlson has training and experience are:
- Fraud/White Collar Crime
- Elderly Abuse/Financial Exploitation
- Handwriting Examiner- Trained by the United States Secret Service
- Computer/Cellular Phone Data Recovery
- Internet Fraud

Our chapter does not offer a discount for partial year membership. You may complete the application at any meeting or on our website under the heading “Join”.
